“She makes people laugh, feel included, and is a great listener! You would never know if Barb is having a bad day.”

Since 2013, Sholom Senior Living has shined a little brighter each and every day. A major reason why is because of Barb Gutzmann. Barb is the Campus Director of Therapeutic Recreation at Sholom, located in St. Paul, Minnesota. She entered her role with extensive experience working with the senior population that allowed her to hit the ground running.

Andrea Krebs, Executive Director at Sholom, shared the joy and love Barb brings to her role each day: “She makes people laugh, feel included, and is a great listener! You would never know if Barb is having a bad day.” With her passion and dedication, it’s quite possible that Barb simply just doesn’t have bad days!

Leading from the Front

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

– John C. Maxwell

Barb is a leader for the Sholom community in so many ways. From leading her therapeutic team to making her residents feel at home, she leaves no stone unturned when it comes to providing the best possible experience for her residents, staff, and community.

A true testament to her leadership is her ability to organize and inspire teams that excel in their mission. As Andrea explains, “Barb takes the time to learn about what brings joy to people’s lives. She is a great listener, makes people laugh and knows how to build a good therapeutic recreation team.”

Andrea continues, “Barb has taken the lead on many projects throughout Sholom. What I am always amazed at is her willingness to help the team (whether it’s her direct team or other disciplines). We had turnover with a similar role at our sister community and Barb took it upon herself to step in and help direct and support the [Therapeutic Recreation] department in their time of need. This directly affected residents in showing that there was a smooth transition between new people on the campus.”

Flower Power

As the saying goes, “it’s the little things that make a house a home.” Barb is consistently focused on bringing those little things to her community each day. One of the most powerful ways is through flowers.

Thanks to the generosity of a local grocer, Sholom has the opportunity take advantage of weekly flower donations. Through diligent planning and execution, Barb makes sure these flowers make it to the community every week. “Barb knows how much flowers mean to our residents and makes it a point to make sure we are able to coordinate the pickup and drop off of these flowers. It’s a lot of work, but one wouldn’t know,” Andrea explains.

Beyond flowers, Barb understands the importance of using technology to enrich residents’ lives. Andrea shares, “Barb is always curious in new technologies for our residents to enrich their lives. She is always learning about new systems and takes the time to do good research before implementing. “Our community is grateful to have many options for our residents to improve their quality of life, and I attribute many of those things to Barb’s forward thinking.”

Andrea summed it up perfectly: “Barb is great!” Our team at Eversound couldn’t agree more. We are thrilled to recognize Barb Gutzmann as our Eversound Champion for July!
